Lateral Heterogeneity (3D)

3D tomographic models

Three-dimensional (3D) tomographic models describe lateral variations in the physical properties of a heterogeneous Earth as positive (blue) or negative (red) perturbations to the spherical average at each depth. Shown from left are isotropic shear-velocity variations from S362ANI+M (Moulik and Ekström, 2014) around the equator looking from the North Pole, globally at a depth of 150 km, and for a cross-section of the Japan subduction zone.
